Please Note: Workshops are usually one day only and planned and presented by Mark as a set program. Residencies on the other hand, may incorporate workshop material but are usually longer term and are a collaborative process created in partnership with teachers and administrators.

Instrument Making Workshops (Cool Sound Effects) 

(Size: up to 100 participants at a time. Age range: 6-100. Time required: 45 minutes.)

  • For Students: Participants make 1-3 simple instruments and learn to play them. Mark also introduces them to  the Djembe, The Djun-Djun, The Irish Bodhran, The Siberian Shaman Drum, The Ocean Drum, The Talking Drum and more. If combined with a performance program, we rehearse our parts and learn a rhythm.
  • For Teachers: The same basic idea but in this case the teachers are learning how to make the instruments, how to teach others to make them and exploring ways to incorporate them into their own teaching style.
Drumming Workshops:

  (Size: 10 to15 participants. Age range - K-12. Time Required 45 minutes.)

  • For Students: Introduction to African Polyrhythmic Drumming. Participants learn how to play the Djembe & Djun-Djun,  Agogo Bells, and Cow Bells. Proper use of hands and arms is emphasized as well as listening skills, self control etc.
  • For Teachers: The same basic idea but with an emphasis on the interconnected ness of words/language and rhythm. I use language to help teach rhythms therefore rhythms my help to teach language.
